Which file is best for photography JPEG or TIFF? A TIFF will enable you to store richer, more detailed images. Its good practice to save your original (or source) photos as TIFF files. JPEGs, meanwhile, might be a better choice for exporting your finished edits because theyre easier to share and print.
A tiff is an image (tagged image file format), and can only be edited using an image editing application like Photoshop. This will be true of any image format you produce from a scanner. To translate the tiiff back to text you would need optical character reading (OCR) software.
TIFF or Tagged Image File Format are lossless images files meaning that they do not need to compress or lose any image quality or information (although there are options for compression), allowing for very high-quality images but also larger file sizes.
PNG files tend to be much smaller and more compatible with programs than TIFF while still offering excellent quality and lossless compression. TIFF format files offer professional-level quality, increased color support, and layer support at the expense of larger size and less compatibility.
Choose File Save As, and from the Format menu, select TIFF. The TIFF Options window will appear, offering different compression methods such as LZW, RLE, or ZIP1. Pick the one that best suits your needs, keeping in mind that all proposed compression methods are non-destructive2.
TIFF is best for any raster images that you intend to edit and is relied on to preserve quality. It offers options to use tags, layers, and transparency and is compatible with photo manipulation programs like docHub Photoshop.
Both PNGs and TIFFs are excellent choices for displaying complex images. But PNGs tend to be smaller in size, so are potentially better suited for websites. TIFFs, on the other hand, are often the best choice for professional use, scanning, and print options.
