Text messages are an effective, quick way to get in touch with patients or staff when you need to send an appointment reminder, a general alert, or any type of important message.
Your health and care organisation (e.g. GP, hospital, social care provider) may use email and text messaging to contact you with: Appointment reminders. Appointment letters. Individual invites to screening, medication reviews, vaccination appointments.
Texting patient information to patients is allowed by HIPAA provided the Covered Entity has warned the patient that the risk of unauthorized disclosure exists and has obtained the patients consent to communicate by text. Both the warning and the consent must be documented.
It is okay for a doctor to send text messages to a patient, provided that the message complies with the minimum necessary standard, the patient has given their authorization to be contacted by SMS text and warned of the risks of communicating personal information over an unencrypted channel.
Most SMS Messages are Not HIPAA Compliant This is because they are not encrypted, cannot be recalled if sent to the wrong recipient, and can be intercepted on public Wi-Fi networks. Although mechanisms exist to resolve these issues with SMS messages, they are rarely used.
The answer is a resounding yes! Medical messages are completely okay, as they are exempt from the written consent rule. In other words, if you have a patients phone number, you can lawfully text them information without consent so long as the message pertains to their health.
HIPAA does not prohibit the use of text messaging in healthcare. It is perfectly acceptable for doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to communicate with each other and even patients via text message.
Before texting a patient, you need to make sure that theyve given their consent to being texted by you. Texting patients who havent consented to text message communication can be a major violation of HIPAA standards, not to mention other regulations set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
