The SMS Koenigsberg was a light cruiser, part of a class of four ships designed for the German Navy in the early 1900s. It emerged during the Anglo-German naval arms race, which strained the navy's budget for cruiser construction. As a result, the Koenigsberg class aimed to fulfill dual roles as fleet scouts and ships for Germany's colonial stations, rather than having separate ships for each function. These cruisers were relatively small, with a displacement of about 3,500 tons and powered by coal and triple-expansion engines, achieving a top speed of 24 knots. They were armed with ten 105 mm (4.1 inch) guns, with a pair positioned at the front, a pair at the rear, and three on each side, along with a similar number of 52 mm guns.
