The lesser-known cousin to the cervical Pap smear, an anal Pap test—or more technically, anal cytology—is a screening test that collects cells from the anal canal to determine if you have anal cancer or are at risk of getting it.
If your pap smear test comes back as abnormal, or positive, it means there is an unusual cell appearing in your cervix. This result does not mean you have cervical cancer. Most often, these test results are the sign there have been cell changes caused by HPV (human papillomavirus).
The phrase “endocervical cells present” simply means that your doctor sampled cells from the inside of your cervix during the Pap smear. The phrase “squamous metaplastic cells present” means that the pathologist who examined your Pap smear found cells that were growing and repairing themselves regularly.
A Pap smear, also called a Pap test, is a procedure to test for cervical cancer in women. A Pap smear involves collecting cells from your cervix — the lower, narrow end of your uterus that's at the top of your vagina. Detecting cervical cancer early with a Pap smear gives you a greater chance at a cure.
The presence of endocervical component (ECs) on cervical smears is considered essential for determining the adequacy of the Pap smear. The absence of an endocervical component in a negative smear suggests that a repeat Pap smear should be taken.
Listen to pronunciation. (pap smeer) A procedure in which a small brush is used to gently remove cells from the surface of the cervix and the area around it so they can be checked under a microscope for cervical cancer or cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer.
Mild inflammation was defined as less than 30 inflammatory cells/high-power field; moderate inflammation was defined as 30 to 100 inflammatory cells/high-power field; and severe inflammation was defined as more than 100 inflammatory cells/high-power field.
Inflammation on a Pap smear can be found in a patient of any age and may be attributable to a benign infection—such as Candida vaginitis—that need be treated only if the patient is symptomatic. Sexually transmitted infections can also cause an inflammatory reaction on the cervix and should be treated ingly.
Inflammation. If inflammation (redness) is present in the cells on the Pap smear, it means that some white blood cells were seen on your Pap smear. Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem.
“SATISFACTORY FOR EVALUATION” indicates that the specimen has all of the following: Appropriate labeling and identifying information. Relevant clinical information. Adequate number of well-preserved and well-visualized squamous epithelial cells.
