Identify your recommenders Current professors and doctors with whom you work or volunteer are your best choices. But former professors and doctors with whom youve worked in the past are fine, too. (If youre applying to osteopathic schools, you must have a letter from a DO.)
While the letter should be no less than a page and no more than three pages, anywhere in this range is acceptable. Its important that the letter writer prioritizes quality over quantity. If a one-page letter has all the content needed for an excellent recommendation letter, theres no need to add to the word count.
We encourage recommenders to save a copy of their written letter prior to submitting the online recommendation form (e.g., as a Word or PDF file), to ensure you have a copy for your records and for later use if you are asked to submit other recommendations for the student.
Can I use the same letters of recommendation when reapplying to medical school? (Note: AMCAS does not retain recommendation letters from previous application cycles. Therefore, youll need to resubmit letters youd like to reuse.) You can indeed use past letters of recommendation as a reapplicant.
Through your school: Most universities offer to store your recommendation letters, either through the career center, pre-health advising center, or a similar service on campus. Via an online third-party letter storage service (also called a dossier service), such as Interfolio.
A letter of recommendation for medical school should fill at least one entire page (usually 400 600 words) and contain an introduction, up to 4 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. If the letter is being submitted by mail or fax, it should also include a standard letterhead.
The AMCAS program does not keep letters on file from applications in previous years. You must resubmit letters of evaluation to the AMCAS program for each application cycle you apply.
Most schools provide a letter storage service via their career center or similar resources. There are also online letter-holding services like Interfolios Dossier that you may use to store letters for multiple application systems.
