A Value-Added Tax (VAT) invoice is a document issued by an accountable person. A VAT invoice sets out the details of a taxable supply and all related information as prescribed by VAT law. A VAT invoice must issue within fifteen days of the end of the month in which goods or services are supplied.
If youre in business, youll have heard the term invoice and probably used it to do business its simply an accounting document you send to a client to request payment for goods or services. A value-added tax (VAT) invoice is a specific type of invoice which includes sales tax on it.
A non VAT invoice does not have a VAT registration number written on it. Also, VAT is not applied on such invoices. While it is good to have a digital record of all your invoices, an invoice without VAT need not have a digital record. Businesses issuing invoices without VAT cannot claim input VAT on purchase invoices.
Your invoice has to include the following information at a minimum: An invoice number - invoice numbers must be sequential with no gaps in between. Your company details - company name (or your own), your address, contact details etc. Company details of client - their company name (or their own), their address etc.
VAT, on the other hand, is collected by all sellers in each stage of the supply chain. Suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers all collect VAT on taxable sales. Similarly, suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and end consumers all pay VAT on their purchases.
When you register for VAT, youll be given a unique VAT number, and youll need to start issuing VAT invoices instead of regular invoices. VAT invoices should contain extra details about the tax rate(s) charged and the total amount of tax due they must also show your VAT number.
This is not a VAT invoice Issuing an invoice that states this is not a VAT/tax invoice in theory does not create a tax point because it is not a VAT invoice and so the tax point shifts to when the invoice is paid. Once paid, the supplier must then issue a proper VAT invoice to the customer (usually on request).
The Value-Added Tax (VAT) invoice must show: the date of issue. a unique sequential number. the suppliers full name, address and registration number. the customers full name and address. in the case of a reverse charge, the customers VAT number and a notation that a reverse charge applies.
