Method Of Exam Roll the stick gently between the thumb and index finger. Remove and smear a labelled glass slide. Cervical scrape: Place the longer end of a cervical spatula into the os of the cervix and press gently, turn and scrape. Smear a second labelled glass slide.
No special preparation is needed before you have an HPV test. If you are getting a Pap test, you can take steps to make sure the test results are accurate. Avoid intercourse, douching, and using vaginal medicines or spermicidal foam for 2 days before the test.
A Pap smear (also called a Pap test) screens for cervical cancer. The test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix that are cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous. During a Pap smear, your healthcare provider takes cells from your cervix to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer.
Pap test. A speculum is inserted into the vagina to widen it. Then, a brush is inserted into the vagina to collect cells from the cervix. The cells are checked under a microscope for signs of disease.
Basic equipment required for Pap smear collection [Figure 4] Sterilized dry bivalve Cusco speculum. Clean glass slides labeled with a diamond pencil. Sterilized cotton tipped applicator/sticks/Ayres spatula or a Cervex brush. A wide mouth specimen bottle with fixative (absolute alcohol) or commercial instant spray fixative.
The Pap smear shouldnt hurt, but it might be uncomfortable. The good news is, its over quickly.
Conventional Pap Smear: Cervical scrape and brushing is recommended. Except for evaluation of maturation index and detection of vaginal adenosis, submit only one slide. For routine Pap tests, both the scraping of the squamocolumnar junction and endocervical brushing should be spread onto the same slide.
It is now possible to do cervical screening by testing for the virus that causes cervical cancer; human papillomavirus (HPV). An advantage of HPV testing is that samples can be taken without a speculum. Women can even collect a sample themselves (self-testing).
Rotate a spatula 360 once to obtain a single sample. Smear the sample onto the labeled slide. Fix the sample immediately (before it is air-dried) using a cytology spray fixative. Hold the fixative 15-20 cm (6 to 8 inches) away from the slide and evenly spray the slide by depressing the plunger 2 or 3 times.
Two days before your Pap test, avoid intercourse, vaginal creams, suppositories, medicine and douches, as these may obscure abnormal cells. Should you groom or not groom? However you take care of your body, you should keep doing it. It is important for you to feel comfortable during your first exam.
