In Ontario, there is no mandatory retirement age. Being compelled to retire due to your age constitutes age discrimination, with only a few exceptions. An employer may avoid violating the Ontario Human Rights Code if they can demonstrate that the age requirement for retirement is a bona fide occupational requirement.
Were here to help you understand those options. Normal retirement age in the Plan is 65 years old, but you can retire as early as your 55th birthday or as late as the end of the year in which you turn 71. Your retirement date can have an effect on the amount of pension you receive, as outlined on this page.
Contrary to general belief, there is no law that permitted mandatory (e.g. forced) retirement at age 65. However, companies previously had mandatory retirement policies doing just that.
Changes to the age of eligibility The biggest news is the gradual change in the age of eligibility from age 65 to 67. This change will be implemented in 2023.
There is no longer an obligatory Canadian retirement age. Until 2009, there was a mandated Canada retirement age of 65, by which time Canadians had to retire (and you could always retire earlier, if you could afford it).
Contrary to common belief, employers cant legally compel employees to retire upon docHubing age 65 or any other specific age.
