The caregiver should bring the bed to a comfortable waist-high level for themselves. They will instruct the patient to roll onto their side and assist with weight shifting if able. If the patient cannot follow commands, a lift and sling may be needed. After passing the on-bed mobilization challenge, the caregiver will place a folded slide sheet under the patient from bottom to ears. The caregiver will raise the side rail, never reaching over the patient, and pull the slide sheet through on the other side.
