Satellite peaks is used to identify Shake-ups, energy loss, plasmons and various un-identified Peaks. These appears as peaks to the high binding energy sides to the main peak in the XPS spectrum.
The intensity depends on the X-ray emission, charge neutralization, resolution, sample itself and many other parameters. So it may happen that withn the same sample and using same setting you would get a different peak intensity if you measure them on different date/time.
Satellites (shake-off and shake-up) are due to a sudden change in Coulombic potential as the photoejected electron passes through the valence band.
XPS spectra are, for the most part, quantified in terms of peak intensities and peak positions. The peak intensities measure how much of a material is at the surface, while the peak positions indicate the elemental and chemical composition.
A radiation source: The radiation sources used in PES are fixed-energy radiation sources. XPS sources from x-rays while UPS sources from a gas discharge lamp.
The XPS spectrum contains peaks at 285.03 eV attributed to the binding energy of C1s, 103.29 eV to the binding energy of Si2p, 83.98 and 87.7 eV to the binding energy of Au4f7/2 and Au4f5/2, respectively, and 532.68 eV to the binding energy of O1s.
Definition of Satellite Peak: The term Satellite Peak is used to identify Plasmons, Shake-ups, Energy Loss, and various Un-identified Peaks.
