Radial Symmetry This form of symmetry marks the body plans of animals in the phyla Ctenophora (comb jellies) and Cnidaria (corals, sea anemones, and other jellies).
When any plane passing through the central axis of the body divides the organism into two identical halves, it is called radial symmetry. Phylum Coelenterata, Echinodermata and Ctenophora are exhibit radial symmetry.
Ctenophores do not have radial or bilateral symmetry, they have rotational symmetry. There is no plane that divides them into mirror images, as in animals with bilateral or radial symmetry.
Like cnidarians, the bodies of ctenophores consist of a mass of jelly, with one layer of cells on the outside and another lining the internal cavity. In ctenophores, however, these layers are two cells deep, while those in cnidarians are only a single cell deep.
Figure 3.24 demonstrates the anatomy of the main cnidarian forms. The body plans cnidarians generally have radial symmetry (Fig. 3.25 A). Because the tentacles of corals, jellyfish, and sea anemones have this radial structure, they can sting and capture food coming from any direction.
Ctenoplana and Beroe both belong to the phylum Ctenophora. The organisms that belong to Ctenophora are biradial in symmetry and lack cnidoblasts.
Ctenophores move through the water by beating their comb rows they are the largest animals to move entirely by ciliary movements but they also have a complex array of definitive muscle cells.
Ctenophores, also knowns as comb jellies or sea walnuts, are an important phylum in the global ocean, serving as a critical middle step in the food web between smaller zooplankton and larger fishes. Ctenophores are gelatinous like sea jellies (jellyfish), but lack their stinging cells.
