Typical symptoms of an ACL tear include pain, immediate difficulty with walking and sensation of knee instability. Additionally, a pop is often heard and swelling often develops quickly. After a thorough history and physical exam, the diagnosis of a torn ACL can be made.
One of the most common knee injuries is an ACL sprain or tear. Typically, injury occurs during activity/sports play that includes sudden changes in the direction of movement, rapid stopping, jumping and landing abnormally, a direct blow to the lateral aspect of the knee, or slowing down while running.
These include: sprains, avulsion fractures, ACL deficiencies, and complex ligament injuries. More than half of all types of ACL injuries occur with associated damage to another part of the knee most commonly, another ligament, articular cartilage (bone lining), or meniscus (cushion pad).
Almost 9 out of 10 football ACL injuries happen with non-contact (44%) or indirect contact (44%) injury mechanism and thus a part of these injuries can be prevented. Four main situational patterns were identified with pressing/tackling (47%) and tackled (20%) injuries accounting for 67% of all NC or IC injuries.
Severe pain and inability to continue activity. Rapid swelling. Loss of range of motion. A feeling of instability or giving way with weight bearing.
The biomechanical functions of the ACL are mainly to resist anterior tibial translation, and secondly to resist internal and valgus tibial rotation, or combined motions.
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries may occur from coming to a quick stop with a directional change while running, pivoting, landing, or overextending the joint in either direction. The ligaments which attach the upper leg bone (femur) to the large lower leg bone (tibia) create a hinge joint called the knee.
Signs and symptoms of an ACL injury usually include: A loud popping in the knee. Severe pain. Rapid swelling. Loss of range of motion. Knee instability where the knee feels like it will buckle and cannot support the weight.
