It might seem like a laughing matter, but not to the airline that has to repay to replace the slide. Business Insider reports that the stunt could come with a tab as high as $30,000. That cost will cover the repacking of the slide which can cost $6,000 to $12,000 alone and any repairs that may need to be done.
On August 9, 2010, JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater quits his job in dramatic style by sliding down his planes emergency-escape chute while the aircraft is stopped near the terminal gate at New Yorks John F. Kennedy International Airport.
When the inflation mechanism is triggeredby a lanyard pulled by the slide as it tumbles from its storage casegas from the canister accelerates through the aspirators at high speed, creating a vacuum that sucks ambient air into the aspirators through louvers. When the slide is fully inflated, the louvers close.
To activate the slide, one must pull the front cover to a 90 degree angle, then pull the slide out so it is lying flat on the floor or door sill, open the emergency exit and kick or push it out. Gravity will then pull the slide to the ground and it will inflate.
High-pressure gas carbon dioxide or nitrogen gas containers rapidly inflate plane evacuation slides after a crew member opens the aircraft door during flight, as the slide connects to the door with an interior lever called the girt.
Inflatable aircraft escape slides allow passengers to safely exit a plane during an emergency when environmental hazards like water or fire make standard exits unsafe. There are four types of slides: land slides, rafts, off-wing exit ramps and combination exit ramps and slides.
In the case of an emergency on the ground, inflatable slides deploy from the doors and the wing exits, giving passengers a quick way to escape from an aircraft. Its a technology that has its roots at the dawn of the jet age in the 1950s but was preceded by a much simpler escape solution.
In the simplest slide system, when the exit is armed, the slide deployment mechanism is triggered by a lanyard when the door is opened from the inside. This causes the slide to inflate using carbon dioxide stored under pressure stored in a cylinder.
