XPS involves the bombardment of a sample surface with X-rays and measurement of the intensity of photoelectrons and Auger electrons emitted from that surface as a function of their energy. As a technique, XPS can in principle provide not just elemental analysis but also chemical information.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), is a technique for analyzing a material's surface chemistry. XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material.
Chemical Shifts Such shifts are readily observable and interpretable in XP spectra (unlike in Auger spectra) because the technique is of high intrinsic resolution (as core levels are discrete and generally of a well-defined energy) and is a one electron process (thus simplifying the interpretation).
Definition of Satellite Peak: The term Satellite Peak is used to identify Plasmons, Shake-ups, Energy Loss, and various Un-identified Peaks.
Because of the relatively low kinetic energy of the Auger electrons they can only escape from the uppermost few monolayers of a specimen surface. This is the reason why this technique is such surface sensitive.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a surface analytical technique, which is based upon the photoelectric effect. Each atom in the surface has core electron with the characteristic binding energy that is conceptually, not strictly, equal to the ionization energy of that electron.
The shifts in the XPS peak is related to its oxidation state and higher shift in binding energy corresponds to higher oxidation state. Some times more shift with noise peak is related to the satellite peak or shake up and it is a case for only some metal or its oxide for example Ni or NiO.
Hydrogen has no core electrons and, therefore, core–electron XPS is impossible. The H 1s electrons are valence electrons and as such participate in chemical bonding. Any signal from hydrogen would overlap with signals from excitation of valence electrons from other surface atoms.
By contrast, a surface sensitive technique is more sensitive to those atoms which are located near the surface than it is to atoms in the bulk which are well away from the surface (i.e. the main part of the signal comes from the surface region) - in the case of the first sample therefore a surface sensitive technique ...
