Your dock line should have 1/8" of diameter for every 9' of boat with a minimum size of 3/8". This means a 20' boat should use 3/8" lines. A 40' boat should use 5/8" line.
The first line to tie to the dock is the bow line. Tie the bow line of the boat to one of the dock cleats that's ahead of the bow. Tie the spring line to the dock at an angle away from the bow and toward the stern, securing it to a cleat closest to the stern. This prevents the boat from moving forward and backward.
However, even with proper care, lines tend to get 'gunky' over time, and many boaters elect to replace their lines every 2-3 years. Dock lines are also prone to some stiffening from repeated dampness and drying out.
Nylon only The right rope for dock lines is plain old nylon. Nylon has three characteristics that make it ideal for dock lines. It is incredibly strong, it is very stretchy, and it is very good at resisting the harmful effects of sunlight.
As a general rule, the length of bow and stern lines should equal two-thirds of your boat's overall length. Spring lines should be slightly longer, approximately the same length as your boat.
A properly outfitted boat should have at least six dock lines on hand. Two (each) bow and stern lines, and two spring lines. The length of the lines depends upon how and where you moor your boat.
Dock lines are ropes that secure your boat in place at the dock for short-term mooring. They're often made of nylon, which allows them to be strong, elastic, and resistant to abrasion, UV rays, and rot.
