In this poster, I will talk about initial experiential research which informs alarger project looking at the creation of wing insignia by Allied Prisoners of War held in Europe during the Second World War. Enemy air crew were not treated favourably when downed. They were considered responsiblefor bombing civilians (or protecting the people who did), and therefore reactions to them could be very hostile. Some air crew rid themselves of anything, such as their wing insignia, whichcould mark them out as a target. Prisoners were also at the mercy of their captors and could be robbed of their insignia and other valuables. When they docHubed camps however, some men wanted to regain this aspect of their identity. Being a PoW was also a docHub new aspect of the mens identity and some chose to embrace it alongside their air force identity.
