The Lachman test is a specific clinical exam technique used to evaluate patients with a suspected anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The test relies on proper positioning and technique and is regarded as the most sensitive and specific test for diagnosing acute ACL injuries.
The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line.
With ACL tears, walking is possible but can be painful. The patient should be able to walk in a straight line but will be unable to make sudden turns or pivot. A knee brace can help stabilize the knee, but with ACL tears, surgery is almost always required.
Surgical treatment is recommended for individuals with a grade 3 or complete ACL tear. Surgical options may vary based on the type of ACL injury, whether the patient has open or closed growth plates, and the type.
The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line.
Signs and symptoms of an ACL injury usually include: A loud "popping" in the knee. Severe pain. Rapid swelling. Loss of range of motion. Knee instability where the knee feels like it will buckle and cannot support the weight.
A grade 3 ACL sprain is a complete tear. A complete ACL tear is extremely damaging to the knee and almost always requires surgery, plus a long recovery period. If you've suffered a grade 3 ACL sprain, you likely experienced severe pain and instability in the knee.
Complete ACL tears cannot heal on their own, and therefore, almost always require surgical intervention. The ligament, given its location in the knee, cannot spontaneously heal because it has poor blood supply to it.
The McMurray test is the most common clinical test used to diagnose meniscal tears. Anterior drawer (AD) sign, Lachman test, and pivot shift test are commonly used to diagnose ACL injury. There is no uniformity in the results published about the accuracy of these tests.
Optimal rehabilitation is staged for return to aggressive sports activities or heavy labor after approximately six months. Expected recovery for those who do not need surgical intervention usually occurs in three months at which time swelling should be resolved and strength is usually recovered.
