Third person omniscient narration is used in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men to great effect. Steinbeck sticks to the tone of the story with sparse, detached narration that gives nothing away to the reader.
Steinbeck compares Lennie to a bear, a potentially very dangerous animal. Lennie drags his feet the way a bear drags his paws . The only way he can cope is to be a like a tame dog, tethered always to his master George and never let out of his master's sight.
Steinbeck uses animal imagery to describe Lennie because he is often portrayed as being very strong physically like most animals, but mentally is disable which leads him to being unaware of his surroundings. To describe Lennie and acts on his instincts through his actions.
The structure of Of Mice and Men is cyclical – there is a sense of things happening in a certain order and being repeated. This is reflected in the way that the book starts and ends in the same place - the brush by the Salinas River.
All George and Lennie are really hoping for is described here: a place where they feel they belong and do not have to leave. These are the things that are missing from their lives, showing that the reason they need the dream is to have some hope that their lives may improve.
In sharing his vision of what it means to be human, Steinbeck touches on several themes: the nature of dreams, the nature of loneliness, man's propensity for cruelty, powerlessness and economic injustices, and the uncertainty of the future.
Lennie is described as being George's 'opposite' – 'a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws'.
Steinbeck utilizes repetition and circular structure to convey the lure and challenges of the American Dream in Of Mice and Men. Throughout the story, Lennie and George have a dream of owning a little plot of land. In this dream, the pair have a place they belong, and Lennie will get to tend to the rabbits.
Why is it used? Lennie's mental disability makes him unable to understand situations, the way that others behave and what they say. His size and lack of intelligence are often emphasised through the comparisons made between him and animals.
The three main themes in Of Mice and Men are: dreams. loneliness. companionship.
