this video is an introduction to xps xps is most often viewed through the analysis of xps data which involves using software to work out quantification and chemical state information based on spectra that are gathered from samples but to properly understand how the sample is analyzed in terms of the software its important to have some appreciation of the xps technique itself so this involves having an understanding of what were looking at in terms of energy spectra and also how spectra are acquired that will then be processed to produce the information that were after an xps spectrum is an energy spectrum and the energy spectrum is acquired by changing the energy at which we sample the number of electrons that arrive at a detector and as a consequence of these types of measurements we can create a histogram of intensity as a function of energy here its plotted as intensity as a function of binding energy and the binding energy is related to an electronic configuration with an atom

Chemical shift arises in the initial state from the displacement of the electronic charge from the atom towards its ligands, reducing the electrostatic potential at the atom. There is a final state shift due to the polarization of the ligand by the core on the central atom.
In contrast to SEM/EDS which has a typical analysis depth of 1-3 m, XPS is a surface analysis technique with a typical analysis depth of less than 5 nm and is therefore better suited for the compositional analysis of ultra-thin layers and thin microscale sample features.
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) allow for targeted analysis of sample surfaces. These techniques are widely used for material surface analysis, investigation of product failures, reverse engineering, contaminant identification, solder joint analysis and more.
EDX is an analytical technique used for the elemental analysis or chemical characterization of a sample, On the other hand, XPS measures the kinetic energy and number of electrons that escape from the top 1 to 10 nm of the material being analyzed.
The most prevalent electron spectrometer for XPS is the hemispherical electron analyzer. They have high energy resolution and spatial selection of the emitted electrons.
The chemical environment of an atom alters the binding energy (BE) of a photoelectron which results in a change in the measured kinetic energy (KE). The BE is related to the measured photoelectron KE by the simple equation; BE = h - KE where hv is the photon (x-ray) energy.
In contrast to SEM/EDS which has a typical analysis depth of 1-3 m, XPS is a surface analysis technique with a typical analysis depth of less than 5 nm and is therefore better suited for the compositional analysis of ultra-thin layers and thin microscale sample features.
SDD-based EDS detector hardware is the same in both SEM and TEM. However, there are some subtle nuances that greatly influence the number of X-rays a detector acquires and the resulting spectrum when comparing SEM to TEM.
