ASCUS ~ Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance This diagnosis means that some of the cells on your Pap smear did not look entirely normal but did not meet diagnostic criteria for a lesion. Your doctor may either repeat your Pap smear, or perform a colposcopy.
In the 2014 Bethesda System, ASC continues to be included under squamous epithelial cell abnormality, with subcategorization as atypical squamous cells-undetermined significance (ASC-US) and atypical squamous cells-cannot exclude a high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (ASC-H).
An abnormal result indicates there are some cells in your cervix that are not normal and need to be checked for possible HPV. ASCUS happens when your cells are not typical. Your doctor at All Womens Care will perform a test with a special liquid to check for HPV. If none is detected, there is no reason for concern.
A finding of abnormal cells in the tissue that lines the outer part of the cervix. ASC-US is the most common abnormal finding in a Pap test. It may be a sign of infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) or other types of infection, such as a yeast infection.
One of the most common abnormal findings is something called atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, or ASCUS. ASCUS doesnt mean that you have or will ever get cancer, but it signifies that there have been changes in cells that require further investigation and monitoring.
ASCUS Progression to Cervical Cancer Without prompt treatment or close monitoring, about 0.25 percent of women with atypical ASCUS develop cervical cancer within two years.
Since the progression from severe deterioration of cervical cells to cancer generally takes about 5 to 10 years, the condition does not pose any immediate threat, please do not worry excessively.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) With ASC-US, the risk of a high-grade precancerous lesion (cells with a moderate to high risk of developing into cervical cancer) is as high as 7 percent, and the risk of cervical cancer is less than 1 percent [1,2].
