Since the defense generally expects a slide, sometimes a baserunner trying to avoid being tagged out will not slide directly towards the base, but rather to a side away from where the ball is coming, and then docHub back to touch the base. Players generally slide feet-first but sometimes also use a head-first technique.
Sliding into first base can help the runner avoid a tag if the first baseman gets pulled off the bag. This can happen due to a high throw (1B jumping up), or on a ball thrown too far left or right (pulling the 1B in that direction). This means the 1B must complete a tag or get back to the base for a force out.
Sliding head first can be dangerous. Some guys have broken fingers by hitting the base the wrong way, or if an infielder jumps and lands on them. Also, if a infielder jumps and comes down on your arms or shoulders you can really hurt your shoulders.
Can you slide into first base? Yes, sliding is allowed on first base, but it is not recommended since a runner is allowed to overrun the base, which is faster. When sliding to first base, the runner is allowed to leave the running lane within a reasonable distance for the purpose of getting on base.
2-32-1 A legal slide can be either feet first or head first. If a runner slides feet first, at least one leg and buttock shall be on the ground. If a runner slides, he must slide within docHub of the base with either a hand or a foot.
Little League does not have a Must Slide rule for a runner sliding into home or any other base. However, any runner is out when not making a physical attempt (to slide) in order to avoid a collision while a fielder who has the ball and is waiting to make the tag.
Because sliding into first slows you down. Youre allowed to run past first base without being tagged out to begin with, so, if you just keep running through the base, you can keep your highest rate of speed up longer than if you let up at the last instant to slide.
Sliding into first base can confuse or disrupt the umpires ability to make an accurate call; often this will not impact the result, but it can potentially cause an out to become a runner.
