Just because you accept a retention bonus doesnt mean you cant look for another job. Worst-case scenario? You pay back the money. However, in most cases, the money isnt paid to you until youve completed your obligation, so paying back the money isnt usually an issue.
A retention payment (sometimes called a stay bonus or retention incentive) is a lump sum payment outside of an employees base pay that is offered as an incentive to convince a key employee to remain in their current position for a specific amount of time to meet critical and priority business needs.
This will be a one-time payment of up to $1,500 for workers at hospitals, nursing homes/SNFs, and medical groups that are affiliated with a hospital system (like Permanente and the Dignity Health Foundation). We expect the payments to docHub workers sometime in early 2023.
If youre considering a retention bonus agreement with your employer, then you can perform a cost-benefit analysis. Typically, the analysis considers whether the short-term bonus outweighs the long-term benefits of finding another role. If you think it does, then accepting the retention bonus is an excellent choice.
Under the US National Labor Relations Act, employees have the right to find new employment. But if staff resigns before the date stipulated in their retention contract, they may be obligated to return any benefits they received in relation to the agreement.
The expense should be accrued monthly, and trued up or reversed as necessary. For any bonus or incentive plan you wouldnt wait until the payment is made to recognize the expense. Correct - the assumption is that the employee will stay, so the entire retention bonus should be expensed ratably over the retention period.
