Common mistakes to avoid when making a. PowerPoint presentation. Too much text. It is easy to see why people make this mistake so often. They want to tell the full story and they end up putting too much text on the slide. Bad color schemes. Unreadable Text. Too many elements. Slide Transitions.
Because each bullet point forms a complete sentence when read with the introductory stem, you should add punctuation to the end of each item.
Use commas to separate independent clauses when they are joined by any of these seven coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet. Example: I love vanilla ice cream, but my brother prefers chocolate. Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause.
Use a period after every bullet point that is a sentence. This means to add a full stop after every bullet point. Use no punctuation after bullets that are not sentences.
The following are a few rules to live by when creating your next presentation: Punctuation has no place on a PowerPoint slide.
Donts Dont read word by word from your script. Dont read out loud from text bullets in your slides. Dont use complete sentences in your slides. Dont speak with a too low or monotonous voice. Dont talk too fast and try to cram a 45-minute presentation into a 30-minute time slot by speaking at a machine-gun pace.
The Ten Uses of a Comma Linking coordinating main clauses. Marking off introductory and contextualising words and phrases at the start of the sentence. Inserting additional information at the end of a sentence. Signalling implications, examples and introducing argumentative points. Parenthetical elements mid-sentence.
PowerPoint Presentation. Use a comma to join 2 independent clauses by a comma and a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, for, nor, so).
