Clauses and phrases are standard components of sentence writing. When the two are combined with other elements of speech, or other sentences parts, clauses and phrases can help to establish a complex structure enabling your verbiage to establish or convey meaning.
Clauses, phrases and sentences are very similar, but they do have different roles. Learning the difference between them will help you make a lot more sense of English grammar, and will be very useful to improve your written English.
Phrases, Clauses and Sentences are the most important structural units of language. They provide structure and meaning to almost all the languages. The phrases and clauses provide a sense to a sentence.
One is Tactic System or Interdependency and the other is Logico-Semantic relation and all of which operate within clauses. Clause complex consists of two or more interdependent clauses. They are made of paratactically or hypotactically related clauses that are connected together in systematic and meaningful ways.
DEFINITION OF CLAUSE AND PHRASE: A clause is a group of words with a subject-verb unit; the 2nd group of words contains the subject-verb unit the bus goes, so it is a clause. A phrase is a group of words without a subject-verb unit.
An easy way to remember the difference between a phrase and a clause is to remember the building blocks of a sentence. A clause contains phrases and a sentence contains clauses. So, to make a sentence, the building blocks would go in this order: phrase clause sentence.
Clause complexing comes under the logical metafunction of language, which in turn belongs to the broader ideational metafunction of language. It refers to the relationships that exist between clauses in a sentence. These relationships are of two types, taxis and logico-semantics.
