Some merchants still have customers swipe their magnetic strips instead of inserting their chips. This eliminates the security benefits of the chip, but you do not need to worry. As a consumer, you still receive the full fraud protection of your credit card whether you use the magnetic strip or the EMV chip.
If it has a chip in it, you insert it into the terminal so the terminal can read the chip. For cards that do not have a chip, but have a magnetic stripe, you would slide/swipe the card so that the terminal can read the magnetic stripe.
In comparison, tapping to pay using a contactless chip can take only seconds. Contactless payments are much faster than inserting a credit card and safer than paying with cash or by means of magnetic stripe swipe.
Position the magnetic strip thats on the back of the card into the card readers slot so the magnetic strip faces toward the card reader. If the card reader lies flat, keep the magnetic strip on the bottom so the front of the card faces up as you insert it into the card reader.
Swipe your card through the point of sale machine. Most merchants will have a separate point of sale (POS) machine that you will need to use to swipe your debit card. If your debit card has a chip on one side, you will need to insert your chip into the bottom gap in the POS machine for the transaction to process.
What Is a Swipe Transaction? A Swipe Transaction is when your customer inserts their card into a card reader or credit card machine when making a payment for a product or service. The process can also occur with a mobile payment, also called a digital wallet.
Once you swipe, the card reader sends the data to the merchants bank, which checks with your bank to make sure that the card is valid.
To swipe your credit card correctly: Position the magnetic strip thats on the back of the card into the card readers slot so the magnetic strip faces toward the card reader. If the card reader has a slot on the side, move the magnetic strip through the card reader slot from top to bottom.
