On the Themes tab, under Theme Options, click Background. On the pop-up menu, click Format Background. In the sidebar, click Fill, and then click the Solid, Gradient, Picture or Texture, or Pattern tab. Choose the background fills that you want.
At the bottom of the screen, choose the slide you want to change. Tap the “+” icon at the top of the screen. Click on “Image” from the popped-up options. Select the image you want to be the background.

Add a background picture Select the slide you want to add a background picture to. Select Design > Format Background. In the Format Background pane, select Picture or texture fill. Select File. In the Insert Picture dialog box, choose the picture you want to use and then select Insert.

Change background image On your computer, open a presentation in Google Slides. Choose a slide. At the top, click Slide Change background. To the right of "Image," click Choose. Choose an image, then click Select. To add the image to one slide, click Done. To add the image to the whole presentation, click Add to theme.
The best colors for slides have high contrast so they are easily seen. Dark backgrounds should have light text and bright accent colors. Light backgrounds should have dark text and bold accent colors. This way the audience can read the text and see the graphs or shapes on each slide.
At the bottom, touch and hold the slide you want to change. At the top right, tap More Change background. Tap the background you want to use. To add the background to the whole presentation, tap Apply to theme.
However, if we have to choose one, I would say that a dark background is a safer choice. The main reason behind is that a dark background is more comfortable for the audience. Light backgrounds – especially white – release a fair amount of light that can be uncomfortable for the eyes.
