The Department of Homeland Security recently announced an alternative I-9 employment verification process for verifying the employment status for remote workers. It is critical to note here that this alternative verification method is only available to qualified employers who are in good standing in E-Verify. Further, if a qualified employer chooses to use this new method for verification for new employees, that employer must also offer it to all existing employees for remote locations. A qualified employer can choose to offer the alternative method for remote hires, but continue to physically examine documents for employees that work on location or in a hybrid capacity.
