hey this is Ralph and in this video I want to use conditional formatting to checks and fields for their length okay so I regularly use an Excel gradebook for my students this makes it easy for me to put hyperlink so I can click over and check on webpages type comments into the Excel and then Ill do a mail merge to email this information out to the individual students so Im creating comments and one two or three columns sometimes however when I do a mail merge the text length data cant exceed 255 characters now there might be ways to trick the system and restore and I dont want to have to try to think and resort every time what I do want to have happen though is Excel just to alert me visually that Ive typed more than 255 characters and then I can easily do something else I could shorten that statement or it can break it up into multiple statements or something like that so Ive got a gradebook page open and Ive got some pretend comments to various students here lets go and do t

To do this, first select the cells you want to format. Then, click the Format drop-down menu and select Conditional Formatting. In the Conditional Formatting dialog box, select the Font tab. From here, you can select the desired font face and size.
You cant change the font name or the font size in Conditional Formatting. Thats why they are greyed out. You will have to use VBA if you want to do that.
Go to Home Conditional Formatting Highlighting Cell Rules Greater Than.. / Less Than.. Based on what option you select (greater than or less than), a dialogue box would open. Lets say, you select the Greater than option. In the dialogue box, enter the number in the field on the left.
Select Your Range Before You Begin Highlight all of the cells in the sheet to which youll apply the formatting rules. Click Conditional Formatting. Select Highlight Cells Rules, then choose the rule that applies to your needs. Fill out the Less Than dialog box and choose a formatting style from the dropdown.
On the Excel Ribbons Home tab, click Conditional Formatting, to format the values greater than a specific one, select Highlight Cells Rules and then choose the option Greater Than.
