The plan is to give workers 40 hours of paid sick leave if they themselves get COVID and on top of that in additional 40 hours to take care of a family member who gets COVID. Does this mean paid sick leave will be retroactive? Yes, it does. So it goes back to January 1st of 2022. So there is a gap from when the last program ended to when this one starts, so there wont be coverage for October, November and December. Of 2021 who is covered. Employees of companies that have over 25 workers are covered by this proposal. Part time workers are also covered, however, not for the same amount of hours. The hours that they qualify for our calculated differently. It depends on the hours that they work. How about independent contractors? Independent contractors are not covered by this like most labor protections, this only covers employees and not independent contractors. If the employer is in a position to prove that the employee was not sick, disciplinary steps may be taken against the employee. If the employee is sick for one or two days, the employer has to grant paid sick leave, even if the employee is not booked off by a medical practitioner.
As mentioned, on average, full-time employees get 8 paid sick days per year, and part-time employees receive 6 paid sick days. However, to arrive at the most appropriate number, you will need to consider other factors, including applicable federal, state, and local laws.
How many sick days a year is normal? Most companies that I am familiar with that use a vacation/sick/personal day format instead of a PTO format provide between 10 and 15 sick days a year.
