As noted at the start, it is a good idea to ask for severance pay to be paid out as a lump sum so that you can get the most out of the payment, can have finality, and you wont run into a situation where you end up getting less severance pay than initially promised.
Severance pay is offered to employees who retire, are laid off, or docHub the end of the contractual agreements. One months salary must be paid to employees who have worked for a year or more. For mass termination in protected sectors, three months of wages must be offered to employees.
The Employment Standards Act (ESA) and Employment Standards Code (ESC) provides the minimum standards for termination pay and severance in general, one week of severance pay for each year of employment.
Here are some additional suggestions for using your severance pay wisely. If you have debts, consider using your severance to repay them. Start with debts that have the highest interest rate, such as credit cards. If you envision yourself going back to school, you could invest your severance pay in your RRSP.
Transfer to RRSP One way to decrease the amount of income tax owed on a severance payment is to transfer the whole amount directly into your RRSP. If you can do this, then your employer will not withhold any tax on the severance payment. But you will be eventually taxed when you withdraw from your RRSP later in life.
Can I collect EI if I get severance? An individual in Canada is not allowed to collect EI benefits (unemployment) while they receive severance pay. You are not allowed to receive severance pay and EI benefits at the same time.
Severance pay They are entitled to 2 days regular wages for each full year that they worked for the employer before their termination of employment. The minimum benefit is 5 days wages.
