A payroll deduction refers to money that your employer withholds from your paycheck for a number of different reasons. This includes mandatory deductions that are taken for tax purposes or voluntary deductions for various benefit programs, such as retirement plans or healthcare contributions.
Mandatory deductions: Federal and state income tax, FICA taxes, and wage garnishments. Post-tax deductions: Garnishments, Roth IRA retirement plans and charitable donations. Voluntary deductions: Life insurance, job-related expenses and retirement plans.
For the employees convenience and ease of collection, some employers allow their employees to have the amount of their contribution deducted from their paycheck. However, any deductions made from your paycheck must be voluntary, and authorized by you in writing.
Authority to Deduct means the confirmatory authorisation provided by the Employee in the agreement between the employee and the Bank, authorising the Employer to make deductions from the employees salary or wage.
Written authorization required In a payroll deduction plan, an employee authorizes the periodic deduction of SSF contributions from his or her paycheck. A written authorization for the deductions must be obtained before making the deductions, as described further in the section No reverse checkoff.
