While you cannot legally mandate that employees participate in exit interviews, you should do all you can to encourage their cooperation. One of the ways you can do that is by stressing that a departing employees remarks wont be shared with others in the office, unless youre required to share the information by law.
Here are ten reasons to skip the exit interview. 1. Anything you say can be used against you. It wouldnt take much for your leaders to decide that the reason you shared negative feedback with them is that you are a second-rate employee and theyre better off without you.
An exit interview is not required by law. An exit interview is a chance for you to learn from a departing employee his/her employment experience with your company. Many employers choose not to conduct exit interviews.
My experience is that exit interviews conducted by HR are shared only with top management, not the manager. If they lose a valued employee and the exit interview shows that the manager was at fault, I believe top management will want an explanation from the manager. No company wants to lose good employees.
Confidentiality. Everything discussed during exit interviews must be kept confidential. HR should assure exiting employees that interview records are confidential. HR should tell employees how theyll present results to management (e.g. in aggregate form or anonymous feedback.)
An exit interview is an opportunity to provide honest feedback, but not anything unprofessional and inappropriate. You can offer negative feedback if its done clearly and respectfully. These interviews arent the time to unload your anger and pent-up feelings, either.
Can exit interviews be shared with managers? Not in any competently run HR department, no. The purpose of the exit interview is to help identify possible drivers behind why people are leaving the organization.
Rude and unprofessional comments Your exit interview isnt the time to slam your former colleagues or talk about how much you hated one of your managers. Keep your language work appropriate, and remember to keep other peoples feelings in mind. Your honest feedback is welcome, but not when its offensive toward others.
