Typically, shares purchased via your demat account are transferred to your account within T+2 business days.
In the Equity delivery, the stocks/shares are delivered after the settlement period (Trading Day+2 Working days), but in intraday trading, the stock is traded the same day they are bought (The transaction is completed on the same day.)
Failure to deliver (FTD) refers to not being able to meet ones trading obligations. In the case of buyers, it means not having the cash; in the case of sellers, it means not having the goods.
This system means that if shares are purchased the client must pay the full amount and take delivery in demat account. More importantly, if shares are sold for delivery, the client has to deliver shares to the exchanges to be transferred to corresponding buyer.
The proceeds from shares sold or positions exited are only available for withdrawal after the trades are settled. The settlement cycle for all the instruments traded on the Indian exchanges is T+1 day, where T stands for the trading day. Hence, the funds will be available for withdrawal after T+1 day.
Delivery percentage is calculated by dividing the Deliverable quantity by the quantity traded (in the case TCS, it was 48.2%). Sometimes, delivery percentage is a better stat to look at than deliverable quantity because the absolute number of deliverable shares may not mean much.
Short delivery happens when the seller of a stock fails to deliver them to the exchange to be credited to the buyers demat account. This typically happens when intraday short positions cannot be closed due to illiquidity or stocks hitting the upper circuit. To know more about circuit limits.
Once your sell order goes through and is completed, there may still be a settlement period before the resultant money lands in your account. Usually this takes two to three days.
