For a similar number of vector features with attributes, GeoJSON has almost double the file size compared to shapefile in most cases. GeoJSONs have no spatial indexing. So, its tough to handle when dealing with a large number of features.
Shapefile shape format ( . shp) contains the geometry data. Geometry of a given feature is stored as a set of vector coordinates. The binary file consists of a single fixed-length header followed by one or more variable-length records.
A disadvantage of GeoJSON is that its file size can get relatively large compared to other spatial vector layer formats, such as the Shapefile or GeoPackage formats. However, there are ways to reduce GeoJSON file size by simplifying its geometry and removing unnecessary attributes (Section 7.4. 2).
This can include raster, feature classes and tables all stored within the same container. File geodatabases are commonly used for storing data that is being consumed in ArcGIS Pro and are the native and recommended format when working in ArcGIS. Comparatively a shapefile is stored in a folder.
shp : the file that contains the geometry for all features. . shx : the file that indexes the geometry.
Click on Export to save the map in various formats. Select Shapefile to convert the GeoJSON map to this format, and then click on Export.
You can convert a Shapefile map into a GeoJSON map using this tool as follows: Create a ZIP of your map files. The three files required have the extension . Press the blue button CONVERT TO GEOJSON. To save it, press CTRL + S (or, depending on the browser used, select File - Save as).
There are several advantages to GeoJSON that make it a good option for encoding geographical data. GeoJSON is text-based, editable in a text editor, uses common english words, utilizes a very simple data structure, and is easy for both humans and machines to read.
