Shadow 4: How to Add Shadows to Hand Lettering First, I trace the word with a gray-colored pen, which is where my shadow will be. Then, I move my paper very slightly and then trace it in pink, which is the color I want my word to be. I used a really light gray so this shadow is subtle.
Use a black fine tip pen to draw shadow lines right alongside the letters, then use a light-colored pen to add a shadow as usual. (Or do it in whatever order you want.)

Shadows with tracing paper Write your lettering as you always do on a smooth paper. Then put some tracing paper over your lettering and write exactly the same word again, just in another colour. Try to write it in the same size and shape as you lettered your word first.
The shadows should appear on the opposite side of the light source. If your light source is on the left side, the shadows should appear on the right of the letters. If your light source is on the right side, the shadows should appear on the left of the letters.
How to add shadows to your lettering Choose position of light source. Use a contrasting color. Decide whether to leave space between or not. Add shadows on the opposite side of the light source. Follow the shape of each letter. Make shadows the same width as letters.
