In the shadow of the Almighty. Shadow in Hebrew is צֵל, tsel, also meaning shade or defense. The Almighty God is a protection, a defense, a place to hide and a place of rest.
The Hebrew word tzel means shadow, so one possible meaning of tzelem elohim is that we are Gods shadows in a world that needs the brightness of the holy to find redemption.
צֵל Though physically speaking they are more or less the same, shade and shadow can mean very different things in English: shade is cool and pleasant, while shadow can be frightening, a place where monsters lurk. Hebrew has one word for both: צל
Gods protection here is symbolized as a shade: something which blocks the punishing rays of the sun (Psalm 91:1). This is a subtle echo of Christs sacrificial death on the cross: which blocked Gods wrath on our behalf (Isaiah 53:45).
If God is your keeper, he is your shade on your right hand (Psalm 121:5), meaning no one is nearer to you than the one who keeps you. Nothing can come between you and your God.
Its used often in scripture to describe the character of God. He offers Tzel (shade, shelter, protection, rest) to all men in what theologians call common grace, but to those who are his children through Jesus Christ, we get a special shade, an eternal shade and rest.
Isaiah 4:6 in Other Translations 6 There will be a booth for shade by day from the heat, and for a refuge and a shelter from the storm and rain. 6 It will be a shelter from daytime heat and a hiding place from storms and rain. 6 shade from the burning sun and shelter from the driving rain.
Tzelem is related to the word Tzel צל, which is the modern-day Hebrew word for shadow.
