The primary reason many people choose a condensed font is to save space. Depending on the typeface, up to twice as much copy can be put in the same space using a narrower typeface. Designers can also use a larger point size when working with condensed fonts but the larger size can be misleading.
Condensed vs. Extended: Condensed fonts translate to thinness or precision. Extended fonts quite literally create space and combined with the short font trait, can further drive home the feeling of stability.
Coign: The Most Condensed Font Ever, Probably; Article Colophon Foundry.
Clarendon Text is a contemporary remake of the truly classic slab serif typeface with a distinctively clear and legible visibility. It is a widely usable text type suited for distinction and style without sacrificing readability.
A condensed style of a font is one in which the width of each character in the font is less than its regular or normal style. In other words the aspect ratio of the font appears to be more vertical, allowing you to fit more text on a line. Also known as compressed or narrow in some font families.
Using Rig Shaded Set your type in any of Rigs styles. Select the type and duplicate it. Swap the duplicates font style to another of Rigs styles. Change its colour too. Repeat for each font style and colour desired.
The downside is that condensed fonts are harder to read because the letters are more closely spaced than in standard fonts. Condensed fonts work best in small doses such as for subheadings, captions, and pull quotes, especially when paired with standard fonts of the same type family.
The name Umbra refers to its shadow effect, in which the actual letter shape consists of negative space and is defined solely by its black dimensional shadow. Several other typefaces were created in similar style around the same time, including shadowed weights of Gill Sans.
