Helvetica has come to be representative of modernism. This minimalist art movement was strongest from the 1920s to the 1970s and emphasised the opinion that designs should be kept simple and focused on their purpose, conveying meaning, with as little expression as possible.
Its name, derived from Helvetia, the Latin name for Switzerland, pays homage to its Swiss origins. Helvetica became synonymous with the Swiss Style movement, also known as the International Typographic Style. This design philosophy emphasized simplicity, readability, and objectivity.
The name Umbra refers to its shadow effect, in which the actual letter shape consists of negative space and is defined solely by its black dimensional shadow. Several other typefaces were created in similar style around the same time, including shadowed weights of Gill Sans.
Helvetica and Arial are both examples of Neo-Grotesque sans serifs. Rounding out the sans serif typefaces are the Geometric and Humanistic styles. Geometric sans serifs, like the Modern serifs, took the style to the edge.

Arimo. Steve Matthesons Arimo was designed as a fresh take on Arial, but works perfectly as a cross-platform Helvetica replacement. Arimo has quite a slightly taller letterforms than Helvetica, but is otherwise a fairly decent replacement.
