Instead of calm and peace, Chapter 2 has an air of menace largely caused by the presence of two characters on the ranch: Curley and his wife. While George can see the problems that may arise, Lennie can feel the menacing atmosphere.
Foreshadowing is a technique authors use to hint about a future event without revealing it. Discover how John Steinbeck used foreshadowing to signal the deaths of both Lennie and the girl in his classic novel, Of Mice and Men.
In John Steinbecks novel Of Mice and Men, the death of Candys dog symbolises the loneliness of the ranch workers, and demonstrates that there is no place for affection or sentimentality in their lives. Early on in the novel, George states that men who work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world.
In the first paragraph, what is the narrators tone and the mood? The tone and the mood was very calm and peaceful. Physically describe Lennie and George.
Personification. Giving human traits (qualities, feelings, action, or characteristics) to non-living objects (things, colors, qualities, or ideas). General Example: The wind danced into the room. Of Mice and Men Example: The shade climbed up the hills toward the top (2).
Tone may be playful, formal, intimate, angry, serious, ironic, outraged, baffled, tender, serene, depressed, etc. General Example: Judy, nervous and sweating bullets, felt the world closing in on her as the cop questioned her. Of Mice and Men Example: Lennie avoided the bait. He had sensed his advantage.
Figurative language keeps descriptions fresh and interesting, and it can give the reader better insight into the point the author is trying to make. In this lesson, four types of figurative language were discussed. Personification is assigning human traits to an inhuman object.
George spoke proudly about Lennie showing that he is like a father to Lennie. Slim is described, by the use of a metaphor, as having Godlike eyes. which shows that he has a conscience. Slim is like a priest that George is confessing to he is Godlike.
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE #3 George warns Lennie that Curleys wife is a rat- trap if I ever seen one. The comparison is between Curlys wife and a rat-trap Page 12 FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE #4 Slim moved with majesty He was a jerk- line skinner, the prince of the ranch.
In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck foreshadows events through the use of extended metaphors such as the death of Candys dog, the game of solitaire, and the dead mouse and the dead puppy.
