Blinds (otherwise referred to as shades) made of fabric can either be rolled up (on a tube; Roller shades), folded up (Roman shades) or pushed up in an ion style (Pleated and Cellular shades). Many fabrics are used including cotton, polyester, wool, viscose and silk to create these shades.
The corresponding number to an openness percentage is the opacity of a fabric: a fabric with 1% openness has an opacity of 99% (97% opacity to 3% openness, 95% opacity to 5% openness, etc.)
Different Types of Shades Roller Shades. Roller shades are the ultimate all-purpose window treatments. Solar Shades. Cellular Shades. Vertical Cellular Shades. Transitional Shades. Roman Shades.
Roman shades are one of the most unique and classic-looking types of window treatments, not to mention versatile. They combine the practicality and elegance of shades and curtains. Romans, as they are often referred to, are excellent choices for living room windows.
As a rule, the blinds will look nice if they extend about 3 inches beyond each side of the window opening. So a 42-inch-wide window calls for a 48-inch-wide blind that allows for a 3-inch overlap on each side. This rule can be adapted depending on the type of case moldings you have.
Solar shades are designed to allow you to see out, but others not see in, providing daytime privacy. The exact opposite is true at night! When a light is on in the room, people outside will be able to see directly into your home. While a solar shade provides privacy during the day, it will provide no privacy at night.
The short answer is that blinds are structured window treatments featuring slats that can be tilted open or closed, while shades are a single solid window covering made from softer textiles. Blinds can be horizontal or vertical and are generally available in wood, woven wood, bamboo, faux wood, aluminum, and vinyl.
Roller shades can only be adjusted so much. Top-down, bottom-up Roman shades allow you to customize your privacy and light control even more. As the name suggests, this style can be opened at either the top or bottom.
The most common types of Roman shades are the standard flat fold, plain fold, soft fold, and European fold.
