Whoa! We hope youre ready for a good time, because we are going to learn about something called shades of meaning! Shades of meaning! And by shades of meaning, we are not talking about Devons sunglasses! Which, of course, means hes rocking and rolling! Shades of meaning is a really cool thing to understand, especially when you are trying to find the best word to use in a situation. You see, shades of meaning explain the differences between similar words. Shades of meaning explain the differences between similar words. Let me give you an example! Think of the words boat and ship! They are similar. They are both ways to travel on water, they can hold and carry things as they float. But, theyre different! Boats are smaller than ships. Boats are smaller than ships. Shades of meaning! They arent exactly the same, and thanks to shades of meaning, you know how they are different! Heres another example! Look and stare. They are similar! Both involve using your eyes to see

The carbon gain hypothesis states that shade tolerance is the consequence of high light-use efficiency resulting from traits maximizing carbon gain and minimizing carbon losses in a low-light environment.
Shade-tolerant species are species that are able to thrive in the shade, and in the presence of natural competition by other plants. Shade-intolerant species require full sunlight and little or no competition. Intermediate shade-tolerant trees fall somewhere in between the two.
Shade tolerance is the relative capacity of tree species to compete for survival under shaded (which is to say, less-than-optimal) conditions. It is a tree trait, a functional adaptation that varies among species.
Shade-tolerant plants have adapted their photosynthesis to function optimally under low-light conditions. These plants are therefore capable of long-term survival under a canopy shade. In contrast, shade-avoiding plants adapt their growth to perceive maximum sunlight and therefore rapidly dominate gaps in a canopy.
Shade-tolerant plants are able to photosynthesise in light of relatively low intensity and can grow in shady places such as woodland floors. Shade-intolerant plants are unable to carry out photosynthesis at a high enough rate to sustain growth in low light conditions. Respiration and photosynthesis are opposites.
Shade tolerance is a concept that refers to the capacity of a given plant to tolerate low light levels. From a physiological point of view, shade tolerance of a given plant is defined as the minimum light quantity (see Section III) under which a plant can survive (Valladares and Niinemets, 2008).
Shade tolerance is a comparative term used to describe a tree species ability to become established, grow and persist under shade or low light intensity, quality and duration. Tolerant species can grow comparatively well when little light is available.
Under vegetative shade, the shade avoiding species induce a series of shade avoidance responses (SARs) to outgrow their competitors, while the shade tolerance species induce shade tolerance responses (STRs) to increase their survival rates under dense canopy.
Shade Tolerance Tolerant species can grow comparatively well when little light is available. Intolerant species cannot grow well in low light levels, but grow very well at light levels approaching full sunlight.
