Morphologically, growth of shade-tolerant species under low light conditions typically results in thinner leaves, reduced apical dominance, high branching frequency and low elongation response. In addition, plants accumulate higher chlorophyll content per leaf area or leaf dry mass (Valladares and Niinemets, 2008).
Shade-tolerants can capture and use low levels of light to make food without burning it all in the process. Its not so much that they photosynthesize more under low light than shade-intolerant species do.
Shade tolerance is the relative capacity of tree species to compete for survival under shaded (which is to say, less-than-optimal) conditions. It is a tree trait, a functional adaptation that varies among species.
The net photosynthetic response to light for plants grown in shade was comparable to responses for plants grown in full sunlight. Plants grown in full sunlight produced more biomass, tillers and leaves, and allocated a larger proportion of their total production to roots than plants grown in shade.
Shade-tolerant species are species that are able to thrive in the shade, and in the presence of natural competition by other plants. Shade-intolerant species require full sunlight and little or no competition. Intermediate shade-tolerant trees fall somewhere in between the two.
Shade plants have an even greater need to dissipate excess light interception because they absorb more light (more chlorophyll per unit leaf mass), but need less light to saturate photosynthesis.
Shade-tolerant plants have adapted their photosynthesis to function optimally under low-light conditions. These plants are therefore capable of long-term survival under a canopy shade. In contrast, shade-avoiding plants adapt their growth to perceive maximum sunlight and therefore rapidly dominate gaps in a canopy.
The Science Some can survive in deep shade by using infra-red and other low-energy light to photosynthesize. They accomplish this by re-equipping their photosynthetic protein complexes with different kinds of chlorophyll that absorb lower-energy light.
Shade tolerance is a comparative term used to describe a tree species ability to become established, grow and persist under shade or low light intensity, quality and duration. Tolerant species can grow comparatively well when little light is available.
(1998) found that the plants usually increased photosynthetic efficiency to improve light utilization by increasing leaf area under shading. With shading, leaf chlorophyll content increases and chlorophyll a/b value decreases to improve plant photosynthetic activity (Abrams, 1987; Lambers Poorter, 1992).
