Skin color is mainly determined by a pigment called melanin. Melanin is produced by melanocytes through a process called melanogenesis. The difference in skin color between lightly and darkly pigmented individuals is due to their level of melanocyte activity; it is not due to the number of melanocytes in their skin.
Skin color changes are noticeable if you know what the skin looked like before an illness started. So you are more likely to notice color changes in your own skin, or in someone who you see frequently. Some skin color changes associated with illness: Purple or bluish skin: This can be is a sign of cyanosis.
The most common way to assess skin color is to use the Fitzpatrick scale, which was developed to classify skin type during a study of UV dosing in psoriasis treatment. (See the box below.) The latest version of this scale classifies skin into one of six types based on its reaction to sun exposure.
Patients with light skin tones should be pink in color. For those with darker skin tones, assess for pallor on the palms, conjunctiva, or inner aspect of the lower lip.
SKIN TYPE CLASSIFICATION One of the most commonly used is the Fitzpatrick scale, which describes the six Fitzpatrick Skin Phototypes (FSPs), from type I (white) to V (brown) and VI (black).
Perform a physical assessment This includes assessment of skin color, moisture, temperature, texture, mobility and turgor, and skin lesions. Inspect and palpate the fingernails and toenails, noting their color and shape and whether any lesions are present.
The Sun Exposure Test: Spending time in the sun is a good way of revealing ones undertone. If you tend to tan easily and rarely burn, you have a warm tone. If you burn very easily and tan minimally, you are cool-toned. If you both tan and burn, you have a neutral tone.
