For example: If you took a black and white photograph of your painting, the shades of grey would be the different values or tones within the painting. Value is the lightness or darkness a color or hue.
As an artist you need to be able to recognize by eye the different values of light and dark. This is done using a value scale. The traditional value scale used by artists includes nine gradually increasing tones from pure white to pure black.
Tone describes the emotion behind the line. It can convey meaning. For example: an angry tone. PHYSICAL SKILLS TO BECOME A CHARACTER FOR REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE (USING YOUR BODY)
A shade is simply a hue that has had black added to it. The colour aubergine can be called a shade of violet/purple if black is added to the hue violet/purple to achieve it.
In color theory, a tint is a mixture of a color with white, which increases lightness, while a shade is a mixture with black, which increases darkness. Both processes affect the resulting color mixtures relative saturation. A tone is produced either by mixing a color with gray, or by both tinting and shading.
In art, the term tone describes the quality of colour. It has to do with whether a colour is perceived as warm or cold, bright or dull, light or dark. Basically there are 3 tones, dark, medium and light, and without these tones there would be no life in the drawing, it would be flat.
For example, you might see a painting of a harbor on a stormy evening. Overall, it may have a dark global tone, but the artist may choose to add light in the area of a boat as if the clouds were clearing right above it. This area would have a localized light tone and may give the piece a romantic feel.
Is Tone and Value the same in respect to color? Basically Tone is a Value. Value is the lightness and darkness of a color. Tint is lightness (adding white to a color), Tone is a change in the color using its opposite (such as green added to red in various degrees) and Shade is darkness (adding black to a color).
