The Sun Exposure Test: Spending time in the sun is a good way of revealing ones undertone. If you tend to tan easily and rarely burn, you have a warm tone. If you burn very easily and tan minimally, you are cool-toned. If you both tan and burn, you have a neutral tone.
While skin tone refers to your skin color, undertone refers to the shade within that color. There are three types of undertones: warm, cold, and neutral. People with the same skin tone can have very different undertones.
Strategy #3: Many authors use food or comparisons to objects to describe skin color. Many authors make food and spice comparisons in writing when referring to skin tone. You will see descriptions that feature cinnamon or caramel or chocolate to denote color.
If you would describe eyes, hair, height, build, etc, then it is appropriate to describe skin color in the same manner. There is nothing racial or offensive about describing what someone looks like, and personally I think its ridiculous to avoid describing such a central feature of someones appearance.
Modifiers, often adjectives, make partial changes to a word. The following words are descriptors in reference to skin tone. Rich Black, Dark brown, Warm beige, Pale pink
SKIN TYPE CLASSIFICATION One of the most commonly used is the Fitzpatrick scale, which describes the six Fitzpatrick Skin Phototypes (FSPs), from type I (white) to V (brown) and VI (black).
Want some alternatives to skin or skin color? Try: Appearance, blend, blush, cast, coloring, complexion, flush, glow, hue, overtone, palette, pigmentation, rinse, shade, sheen, spectrum, tinge, tint, tone, undertone, value, wash.
