we are going to start talking more in color terms starting with tint tone and shade you may have heard these in passing such as lets use a shade of red for this area but theres a good chance that the term shade was being used incorrectly so lets get these color terms down looking back at our modern color wheel these are the pure hues that we work with so let me show you an example of how to create a tint a tone in a shade from a single hue so Im going to pull up red as our example and Im going to split it into three sections and from here were going to mix in white neutral gray and black and then this will result in a tint a tone in a shade of red to remember which is which I typically think that tint and white are similar sounding like a hint of white just like a shade and black are similar in that they both have five letters in the letter a is in the middle and four tone I always think of toning it down and in that way it lessens it now these three are just examples of a tint

A shade is a darker colour tone than the normal value of the pure hues in the colour wheel, produced by mixing a pure chromatic colour (of normal value) with black, dark grey or another hue darker than the original.
A shade is where an artist adds black to a colour to darken it down. A tone is where an artist adds grey to a colour.
A hue is essentially the three primary colours (red, blue, and yellow) as well as the three secondary colours (orange, green, and purple). These colours are pure, meaning that white or black have not been mixed in with them. Black, white, and grey are considered neutral colours.
Shade is a hue or mixture of pure colors to which only black is added. It contains no white or gray. Shade darkens the color, but the hue remains the same.
Shades are dark values that are made by mixing a color with black. Maroon is a shade of red, and navy is a shade of blue.
Shade is a hue or mixture of pure colors to which only black is added. It contains no white or gray. Shade darkens the color, but the hue remains the same.
Tone, Shade and Tint Tone indicates the saturation of the hue. The amount of saturation is known as the tonal value. The tonal value of a hue is said to be adjusted, or “toned down” when you reduce its vibrance without altering the hue. Black, grey or white is added to a hue to adjust its tonal value.
The definition of tonal values in art is how light or dark something is on a scale of white to black. White is the lightest value and black the darkest. Tonal value is one of the most important aspects to painting. It is the value structure of a work that allows us to be able to see light and dark in a painting.
A shade is where an artist adds black to a colour to darken it down. A tone is where an artist adds grey to a colour.
For example: If you took a black and white photograph of your painting, the shades of grey would be the different values or tones within the painting. Value is the lightness or darkness a color or hue. Believe it or not, value is more important than color to the design and success of a painting.
