Chapter five one end of the great barn was piled high with new hay and over the pile along the Fort Allen Jackson Fork suspended from its pulley the hay came down like a mountain slope to the other end of the barn and there was a level place as yet unfilled with the new crop at the sides the feeding racks were visible and between the slats the heads of horses could be seen was Sunday afternoon the resting horses nibbled the remaining wisps of hay and they stamped their feet they bit the wood of the main Jers and rattled the halter chains the afternoon sun sliced in through the cracks of the barn walls and lay in bright lines on the hay there was the buzz of flies in the air blaze the afternoon humming from outside came the clanging of horseshoes on the playing peg and the shouts of men playing encouraging jeering but in the barn it was quiet and humming and lazy and warm only Lennie was in the barn and Lennie sat in the hay beside a packing case under a manger in the end of the barn th

The description includes: kewpie doll lamp, phonograph, rag rug, and flop. These allusions are specific to the historical and cultural situations established in the book. These specific references in this context are being used to describe a brothel or a place men can go to have relations with women.
MiceLennie constantly (and unintentionally) hurts the things he lovessoft things, such as mice (and, of course, his puppy and Curleys wife). This could represent love and, again, the strong vs. weak theme.
In this lesson, we mentioned three symbols from John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men: Candys dog, which represents the fate of those who are weak; mice, which symbolize false hope; and the dream farm, which symbolizes unattainable independence and protection from the world.
There is a childlike wonder in Lennie that can be seen when he first sees the pool of water and slurps down huge gulps of water like a horse. Lennies greatest feeling of security comes from petting soft things. When the rest of the world gets complicated and scary, petting soft things helps Lennie feel safe.
Lennie loves to touch soft things. He is described as petting a dead mouse in his pocket, and later he loves to feel the soft fur of his puppy. This love of soft things not only gets him into trouble with the woman in the town of Weed who is alluded to at the beginning of the novella, but also with Curleys wife.
As metaphors, they serve as a physical representation of what will happen to George and Lennies dream: they (Lennie in particular) will destroy it. Lennie never intends to kill the thing he loves, the soft things he wants more than anything, but they die on him nonetheless.
The colour red was used to symbolise Curleys wife. It is described that her nails, dress and other physical characteristics as being red. This portrays her character as perhaps being quite promiscuous and of a sexual nature.
Curleys wife is a symbol of failed dreams. She had lofty goals of becoming famous and living a luxurious life, but those dreams were ended when she married Curley. Her death ended the dream of George, Lennie, and Candy.
