You should shoot directly next to your light source at a 90-degree angle, then reflect that light back onto the subject. This will give your image as much light as possible while also eliminating as much shadow as possible.
Three of the most important settings are shutter speed, ISO, and aperture otherwise known as the exposure triangle, or the three pillars of photography.
Subject stands in open shade, facing towards reflected light source. Have your subject face the light source. The rule of thumb would be to have your subject look at where the light is being reflected from, but you could also use the reflected light as a side light. Place your subject close to the edge of the shadow.
You can apply simple lighting sources like torches to illuminate the dark areas slightly. Other lighting sources you can use in low light conditions include a phone light. Additionally, the camera flash can help eliminate harsh shadows. However, you might need a diffuser to soften the flashs effect.
Find the best conditions Choose an evenly and well-lighted environment. Tilt your phone flat. Try disabling or enabling your camera flash. Move your head, hand and phone so that they dont project a direct shadow on your document.
Camera settings for shade. If youre taking photos in a setting with lots of shade such as under foliage youll notice that the shadows in your picture turn out way too dark. In this case, you can keep your other settings, but increase your aperture size to f/5.6.
Dial in your camera settings. In order to get nice, deep shadows, expose for the highlights, says Adams. Try to shoot in manual mode, since your camera will want to compensate for the extremely dark areas by balancing the exposure. Keep your ISO low, as higher ISOs will lift your darker areas.
Start with a shutter speed around 1/125 for still subjects and increase as needed to darken your photos. ISO To keep your shadow photos dark, keep your ISO as low as possible. High ISO also adds noise to photos, making them grainy. Noise is very obvious in black colors, so keep the ISO between 100 and 200.
