Shadows change shape, intensity, and even color along with the angle, direction, and temperature of light. Any photo that uses shadows as a prominent part of the composition to enhance the contrast of a subject or as the subject itself is shadow photography.
Shooting in open shade is the safest lighting situation. Exposures come out spot on and the over all lighting is very even and nice. Open shade can be the side of a building or under a tree. It can be your garage (with the door open) or your your front door, or under a tree.
Open shade is when you place your subject on the edge of but still in the shade, facing out towards the light source, which is on your back as the photographer. Closed shade is when you place your subject in the shade facing into the shadows i.e., their back is facing the light source, and they are backlit.
Open shade is when your subject is standing in the shade with the sunlight above them. The magic of open shade is that it creates a beautiful even light across your subjects face and eyes that sparkle with catchlights.
Start with a shutter speed around 1/125 for still subjects and increase as needed to darken your photos. ISO To keep your shadow photos dark, keep your ISO as low as possible. High ISO also adds noise to photos, making them grainy. Noise is very obvious in black colors, so keep the ISO between 100 and 200.
Just look for where the sun is creating a shadow; then look for a big open space up above that shadow. If you can find those two things, you can find open shade!
WHAT IS OPEN SHADE? Simply put, open shade is an area that blocks direct sunlight but is still illuminated from the surrounding light. Learning how to utilize it will allow you to shoot almost anywhere at any time of the day. Add a few other tools and techniques, and open shade can become lighting bliss!
