Hi, This is Jay P. Morgan. Today on The Slanted Lens, in the Laws of Light, weamp;#39;re going to take a look at my number one tip for shooting outside. It works every single time. It gives you great images. Hereamp;#39;s what Iamp;#39;m going to do. Iamp;#39;m going to put her back towards the sun. That sun is up high. And Iamp;#39;m not going to move her forward until I find the shadow transition edge. You see her shadow on the ground down there. I see that thereamp;#39;s shadow on her shoulders in that. But I see that her head is up into the sun. Thatamp;#39;s the perfect place because now Iamp;#39;m looking back into the shadows behind her. But sheamp;#39;s got a nice rim light of sun on her hair. It just looks beautiful. Iamp;#39;m going to set my camera on aperture priority. Iamp;#39;m going to set my aperture at f/2.8. Because I want as shallow depth field as possible. Iamp;#39;ve got here the 70-180mm, the Tamron lens that goes on the Sony

Subject stands in open shade, facing towards reflected light source. Have your subject face the light source. The rule of thumb would be to have your subject look at where the light is being reflected from, but you could also use the reflected light as a side light. Place your subject close to the edge of the shadow.
Open shade is when you place your subject on the edge of but still in the shade, facing out towards the light source, which is on your back as the photographer. Closed shade is when you place your subject in the shade facing into the shadows i.e., their back is facing the light source, and they are backlit.
WHAT IS OPEN SHADE? Simply put, open shade is an area that blocks direct sunlight but is still illuminated from the surrounding light. Learning how to utilize it will allow you to shoot almost anywhere at any time of the day.
Start with a shutter speed around 1/125 for still subjects and increase as needed to darken your photos. ISO To keep your shadow photos dark, keep your ISO as low as possible. High ISO also adds noise to photos, making them grainy. Noise is very obvious in black colors, so keep the ISO between 100 and 200.
Three of the most important settings are shutter speed, ISO, and aperture otherwise known as the exposure triangle, or the three pillars of photography.
Dial in your camera settings. In order to get nice, deep shadows, expose for the highlights, says Adams. Try to shoot in manual mode, since your camera will want to compensate for the extremely dark areas by balancing the exposure. Keep your ISO low, as higher ISOs will lift your darker areas.
8:44 18:04 Face. Its a little hard all this concretes bouncing light up on her face. So it doesnt give it asMoreFace. Its a little hard all this concretes bouncing light up on her face. So it doesnt give it as much drama as Id. Like lets go on to the next way to shoot uh with creating your own shade.
Camera settings for shade. If youre taking photos in a setting with lots of shade such as under foliage youll notice that the shadows in your picture turn out way too dark. In this case, you can keep your other settings, but increase your aperture size to f/5.6.
